Lake Naivasha Boat Ride: Walking Safari — What It’s Actually Like

By Vastrails | June 28, 2026 | Updated June 29, 2026 | 2 min read

Lake Naivasha was our first real taste of Kenya — and it set the tone for the whole trip. After landing, we did not head straight for the open plains. We went to the water first: a boat ride across the lake, then a walking safari on foot. See how it fits into our full 7-day Kenya safari itinerary. If you are comparing shorter trips from Europe, our Jordan planning hub covers a compact week from Cyprus with real costs.

The boat ride: hippos, pelicans, and a changing shoreline

The lake landscape had clearly been shaped by rising waters in recent years. The shoreline felt more dramatic than we expected from photos — trees partly submerged, reeds pushed back, and birds clustered where the water had reclaimed ground. Out on the boat we saw hippos, pelicans, and waterbucks.

The walking safari: quieter and closer

After the boat, we continued on foot. We stood next to a giraffe, sat beside a wildebeest, and walked past horses, zebras, antelope, and more giraffes. On foot felt quieter and more personal than seeing everything only from a vehicle.

Then the long drive to the Mara

Naivasha was only day one. We continued through Maasai Mara towns and reached Mtito Safari Camp for dinner. Our safari was arranged through Meektrails Safaris — drivers, timing, and camp logistics for the Mara section.

Worth it?

Absolutely. The walking safari is what we still talk about. If you are choosing between rushing to the Mara on day one or spending time at Naivasha, we would pick Naivasha every time.
